Columbia Law School is at the forefront of the University's efforts to deploy Generative AI tools for scholarly research, teaching and learning. We've partnered with CUIT to explore and develop innovative tools for faculty and staff use. Among them is the new CU-GPT chatbot engine.

  • Staff Productivity
    Workshops, tutorials, and one-on-one sessions on prompt engineering for staff work such as data cleaning and manipulation, forecasting, and planning using Generative AI tools.

    Working with faculty to develop methodologies, exercises and assessment tools that leverage AI while discouraging illegitimate uses of AI.
     
  • Capacity Building
    Work with faculty and staff to develop new programs, classes, or organizational units focused on emerging AI use-cases, as well as related technologies.
     
  • Office Productivity
    AI-powered tools can assist with wordsmithing and formatting legal documents, improving efficiency and consistency. Natural language processing enables AI to understand context and suggest appropriate phrasing. AI can automate routine administrative tasks like scheduling, data entry, and document management, freeing up time for higher-value work.

Challenges and Future Directions

Incorporating artificial intelligence into law school operations and curricula brings with it a host of challenges and ethical considerations. Key among these is the concern for privacy as AI systems often require access to vast amounts of data, raising issues around the confidentiality of sensitive information. Additionally, ensuring fairness and mitigating bias in AI applications is crucial, as these technologies can sometimes perpetuate existing prejudices if not carefully managed.

Specifically designed for the Columbia community, CU-GPT harnesses the power of AI to enhance productivity, innovation, and collaboration across the university. This service is designed to offer cost-effective AI solutions and can perform various language tasks, such as writing essays, summarizing information, translating languages, and engaging in conversations.

  • Chat Interface: Seamless interaction with GPT, providing a streamlined chat experience.
  • Feedback Option: Users are encouraged to provide feedback to help us improve the service.
  • Pilot Program: This is an experimental phase aimed at refining and optimizing the platform based on user input.

Please note that CU-GPT is currently focused on delivering a robust chat interface and does not include additional features like Advanced Data Analysis, GPT Builder tool, or DALL·E image creation/editing.
