2023 - 2024 Professional Development Workshop Series for Columbia Law School administrative staff

This series of workshops will primarily focus on understanding and strengthening the various ways in which we communicate, interact, and collaborate with one another - whether it be manager to employee, employee to manager, or colleague to colleague.  

Each of the below workshops will be offered once in the Fall and again in the Spring, and all will be in-person. To register, please click on the session(s) below that work best with your schedule.  

 

Communicating with Impact for All Staff

This course is designed to provide participants with skills development around powerful communication in a variety of settings - informal sharing of information at a staff meeting to a formal presentation at a high stakes meeting The course focuses largely on speaking/presenting and how best to engage an audience, answer questions (especially tough ones), and deal with push-back.

 

DISC Behavior Styles for All Staff

This is an extremely interactive course that requires the pre-work of completing a DISC assessment.  DISC is a personal assessment tool used to help improve teamwork and communication in the workplace.  The acronym DISC stands for the main personality profiles in the DISC model:  (D)ominance, (I)nfluence, (S)teadiness, and (C)onscientiousness.

Participants will learn their own dominant behavior style, which influences how they work and communicate, and explore how they partner with other styles different from their own. Participants will also learn what it means to work from strengths - discovering their own top 5 strengths - and the growth that can come from this positive framing of work.

 

Career Conversations for Managers

This workshop reviews the specific discussions managers should be having with employees about their careers, and focuses on 3 different conversations that fall into this space – career perspectives, development planning, and coaching/feedback.  Participants will learn more about why career conversations are so important and how they benefit managers, employees, and the organization alike.

 

Leading Without Authority for All Staff

Wednesday, February 21, 2024 | 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

This course will highlight what it means to be a leader at any level and defines the characteristics and attributes that inspire others to follow your lead, as well as the characteristics and qualities that encourage people to respond.  It will also identify communication-building techniques that will help you effectively work with others, and explain the process of communication and how the elements impact your message.
