CourseWorks

The Law School’s use of the CourseWorks system helps integrate course information more completely with the University's systems.  Please note that LawNet services for registration, grades, and course evaluations are not affected. However, it may take up to 24 hours for add/drop information in LawNet to sync with CourseWorks.  General CourseWorks Information is available on our website located below:

Sending Email: Mailtool

The Mailtool is a Columbia created tool for Canvas-Courseworks that preserves all of the popular features that were available in the older Sakai-based Courseworks Mailtool.  Individuals with the roles of Teacher or TA will have access to use this tool. Teachers may enable student access to the Mailtool on a course by course basis. Teachers may also enable/disable TA access.

With the Mailtool, you can send an email directly to a student’s email account, and bypass Canvas notifications. You’re able to send to specific course roles, groups, and sections. Mailtool also allows you to send yourself a copy and add an outside email address to the recipient list.  Mailtool instructions (log in with your UNI):

Managing/Sending Course Announcements

It is also useful at times to send general announcements to the respective class via the course announcement feature.  More information and an instructional video are available via the links below to help guide you through the process.

Echo360 class recordings

Class sessions may be recorded, upon request, in any of the Law School's classrooms. Our team will schedule the recording, on your behalf, and ensure that the room is prepared for recording before you arrive. No further involvement is required on your end in order to start or stop the recording.

In order to request a recording, please:

  • Email avrequest@law.columbia.edu or call 212.854.2400.

  • Provide us with the L-number, section number and title of your course (ie. L9275, section 1, Computational Text Analysis and Chinese Law).

  • Provide the desired start and end times for the recording (ie. 10am to 3pm).

  • Let us know if you have a preference for what should be recorded (eg. audio-only, audio+presentation, audio+camera, audio+presentation+camera).

Please bear in mind that the recording is automated and will begin and end at the exact times provided. Avoid engaging in any "sidebar" conversations around the microphones during the requested recording times.

Please also note that the system only allows for recordings in 4-hour blocks. If your class runs longer than 4 hours, please provide us with your preferred recording schedule to ensure that we capture the entire class. For example, you my request to record from 10am to 1pm, break an hour for lunch (no recording), and record the second half from 2pm to 5pm. We will label the recordings as Part 1 and Part 2, for the benefit of your students.
