Accounting & Budget

Quarterly budget reviews are conducted between budgetholders and the Budget Team. Columbia University IT Policies

Information Technology at Columbia Law School (Law IT) abides by and upholds Columbia University’s IT policies, which foster a better, faster, and more secure technology experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by protecting the University’s computer systems, networks, data, and information resources.

Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction

The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) has a website which hosts more than 900 Lessons in 30 legal topic areas. Many students find the lessons of value as reinforcement of principles taught in the classroom.

Concur Expense

Concur streamlines the preparation of expense reports and helps you manage receipts, expenses, and travel from your web browser or mobile device. All members of the Law School community can book travel and submit travel and business expense reimbursements through Concur. If you have any questions, please contact the Concur Team at concur@law.columbia.edu.

Noteworthy
  • Travelers will not be reimbursed for airline tickets purchased, partially purchased or accommodations and upgrades obtained using credit card or airline rewards points/miles.
  • Reimbursements to Students and Guests* must be processed in Concur Expense.
  • Outside Party vendor profile is required for Guests in order to receive reimbursements.
  • Expenses over 120 days old will require a justification for the delay in submission
  • Expenses must be submitted within 1 year of the transaction date; failure to submit within 365 days will result in non-reimbursement of expenses
  • Payments for Services and honoraria must be made directly by the University to the recipient through submission of an invoice or a check request. Please refer to Payment Requests 

*Reimbursements to international Guests receiving payment by wire transfer must be submitted against a Wire Request to be processed in ARC.

Concur Requests & Travel

Columbia University has partnered with World Travel, Inc. (WTI) to assist Columbia travelers in making business travel arrangements, consistent with Columbia’s travel policies and affords several benefits:

  • 24/7 support with changes, cancellations, or itinerary modifications when needed
  • Air or rail travel booked using the Central Pay method will be paid directly (no out-of-pocket reimbursement required)
  • All international travel will be automatically registered for International SOS (ISOS) itinerary monitoring and will receive automatic real-time push alerts for destination countries
  • All international travelers will be automatically registered for international travel insurance coverage through Aetna

Personal Travel
Personal travel may not be booked using Concur or via Columbia’s team of business travel counselors at World Travel. Personal bookings of car rentals and hotels at negotiated rates may be made via the Columbia Visitors & Personal Travel Portal.

    Contracts & Agreements

    Only the The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York or a person delegated by the Trustees have the authority to sign contracts on behalf of the University. If you have a contract or agreement that requires any form of signature, it must be addressed to “The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York” on behalf of your department and submitted for signature to events@law.columbia.edu.

    Noteworthy
    • Submit contracts at least 30 days prior to event or first deposit date 
    • Only Brendan Mallee has signatory power for Contracts with Columbia Trustees
    • Only Purchasing Office has signatory power for writer/speaker/performance agreements
    • Always be mindful of payment terms and payment method
    • Signature turnaround is normally within 5 business days

    CourseWorks

    The Law School’s use of the CourseWorks system helps integrate course information more completely with the University's systems.  Please note that LawNet services for registration, grades, and course evaluations are not affected.     Deposits & Billing

    Incoming non-gift payments due to Columbia Law School (CLS) are made against invoices and received via ACH Direct Deposit and Bank Wire Transfer, for reimbursements to and fees for services provided by CLS. If you need help and guidance, please contact the Banking Team at bank.deposit@law.columbia.edu.

    Receiving payments of gifts and awards of sponsored projects follow an entirely different procedure; the receipt of gifts and/or sponsored projects is processed by the central administration of Columbia University, not by CLS. Gifts are collected by CLS Development Office. Refer to our Standard Business Process.

    • CLS must not accept checks from any non-U.S. bank
    • CLS must not accept cash as a method of payment
    • Gifts are collected by CLS Development Office

    Dining & Food

    Events at Columbia Law School (CLS) are normally organized by Special Events, Faculty Affairs, Faculty Assistants, Center/Program Coordinators, or Administrative Department Staff.     LionMail is Columbia's email, contacts, and calendaring system, powered by Google. Official communications from the University will be delivered to your LionMail email account, so it is important that you activate your email account as soon as you can.

      Holding a successful event at Columbia Law School requires planning and preparation. Below, please find some helpful resources to help you schedule, set up, and budget your event.

      Event Support Policies and Procedures

      Columbia Law School’s Event Technology team, a division of the Information Technology department, is tasked with the planning and execution of all audio visual support for events at the Law School. 

      The Event Technology team primarily supports events coordinated through the Dean’s Office and the Office of Special Events. Based on availability, the team may assist with the planning and execution of other events at the Law School on a first-come, first serve basis. In addition to direct support of events, we offer training and documentation to Law School affiliates seeking to put on an event at the Law School.
